Supportive Pointing Operation by Haptic Device

چکیده

We developed a haptic device that uses a trackball to enable the user to recognize the direction of its movement through touch. The trackball with haptic feedback supports the subtle operation that is peculiar to a pointing device, so that users can easily point to even a small object on a screen. The haptic device developed in the present study possesses the characteristics of "compactness," " touch sensitivity," and "effectively guiding a user to the target." In order to verify the effectiveness of our system, we evaluated the pointing device through subjective experiments. The experimental results confirmed the effectiveness of the pointing operation support provided by the device. It also found that the induction of the pointer by the haptic device enables the user to feel the direction of movement of the pointer.
